LPGA rookie So Mi Lee from South Korea fired a remarkable 6-under 66, registering eight birdies to secure the first-round lead at the Mizuho Americas Open in Jersey City, New Jersey. Lee's impressive performance put her two strokes ahead of four players tied at 4-under 68, including Australian rookie Gabriela Ruffels.
Initially uncertain if she would compete as the second alternate, Lee expressed surprise at her strong showing. She credited her father, who stepped in as her caddie, for making her feel comfortable on the course. Starting on the back nine at Liberty National Golf Club, Lee began with a birdie on the par-5 10th hole and continued her momentum with a series of birdies and a few bogeys to lead the field.
Ruffels, who played bogey-free, was among the four players at 4-under, emphasizing her growing confidence as her rookie season progresses. She mentioned the benefits of having an experienced caddie to navigate the new courses.
Joining Ruffels at 4-under were Bianca Pagdanganan, Mao Saigo, and Andrea Lee, while several major winners, including Jennifer Kupcho and Minjee Lee, were part of a large group tied at 3-under 69. Nelly Korda, finishing at 2-under 70, recently ended a five-start winning streak, and Rose Zhang withdrew due to illness.
