Ronnie O'Sullivan retains top spot; Ryan Day's defeat

Posted : 28 September 2023
Ronnie O'Sullivan is set to kick off his campaign at the English Open in Brentwood as the world No. 1, holding his position after Mark Allen's aspirations to take the top spot were quashed by Kyren Wilson in a 4-0 loss during the British Open last 32.

Concurrently, defending champion Ryan Day's bid to retain his title in Cheltenham concluded in a 4-2 defeat to Ali Carter, who will now advance to face either Xiao Guodong or Sanderson Lam in the last 16 on Thursday.

O'Sullivan's stronghold on the top ranking remains as Allen's attempt to seize the £100,000 first prize and surpass O'Sullivan's position was thwarted, with Wilson securing a comprehensive victory.

Despite O'Sullivan's recent withdrawal from the Shanghai Masters due to medical reasons, his position at the top remains firm, with only a 5,000-point margin separating him from world champion Luca Brecel, while Allen trails in third by 45,500 points.
