Ronnie O'Sullivan clinches eighth UK Championship title

Posted : 04 December 2023

Ronnie O'Sullivan secured his eighth UK Championship title with a 10-7 victory over Ding Junhui, marking both the youngest and oldest winner of the prestigious tournament. Despite his historic win, O'Sullivan, known for his perfectionist approach, compared his snooker performance to Seve Ballesteros' golf style, stating, "I felt I played snooker like Seve Ballesteros played golf; I’m in and out of trees, all over the gaff." Reflecting on his display, O'Sullivan acknowledged some frustration but emphasized his focus and determination, stating he had to make Ding earn the win.

Throughout the match, O'Sullivan exhibited signs of frustration, notably in the 11th frame, but managed to regain composure and adopt a patient mindset. The snooker maestro emphasized the importance of staying positive and patiently waiting for opportunities to turn the game in his favor. In a pivotal moment at 7-7, O'Sullivan unleashed a stunning seven-minute century, followed by three consecutive frames, sealing the victory. He expressed his strategic approach, stating, "Sometimes you have to dig deep just to stay in the game and then hope you find a little something."

Comparing his current mindset to his breakthrough win in 1997, O'Sullivan highlighted his experience and lack of panic, noting that he now enjoys the game without the pressure to prove anything. Despite consolidating his world No. 1 status with the win, O'Sullivan downplayed the significance of ranking points, emphasizing his unique approach to the sport. He chuckled at the idea of being pursued for rankings, trophies, and bonuses, stating, "It's wrong that I'm No. 1, and I'm not really that bothered, and everyone's chasing me. Terrible, really. I'm nicking all their glory!"
