Roach's rampage stuns Australia: West Indies dominates on day two at the Gabba

Posted : 26 January 2024

In a remarkable display of pace bowling, West Indies' Kemar Roach orchestrated a swift collapse for Australia on day two of the second test at the Gabba in Brisbane. After posting a total of 311 in their first innings, the West Indies exploited their advantage by dismissing key Australian batsmen – Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, and Travis Head – leaving the hosts reeling at 24-4 during the first break.

Australia's attempt to experiment with Steve Smith opening the batting, following David Warner's retirement, faced another setback. After scoring a boundary in the opening over, Smith fell victim to Roach's delivery, getting hit on the pad. Despite the initial not-out decision, the West Indies successfully reviewed, revealing the ball would have hit the middle stump, leaving Australia at 6-1. Labuschagne's dismissal in the next over further deepened the hosts' predicament, caught brilliantly by Kevin Sinclair at fourth slip off Alzarri Joseph.

The Australian experiment of reshuffling the batting order to accommodate Green also proved unsuccessful, as he gave a simple catch to Kraigg Brathwaite at mid-off. Adding to the woes, Head, who had a stellar performance in the first test, was dismissed for a golden duck. At the dinner break, Usman Khawaja stood unbeaten on six, with Mitchell Marsh yet to join him at the crease, leaving Australia with a daunting task in their reply.
