Officials of the Rivers State Teqball Association have presented the trophies and medals won by the Rivers Whales team to the Director of Sports in Rivers State, Ibigoni Benjamin Akubo, in his office.
In their first-ever national appearance, the Rivers Whales Teqball team won one gold and two silver medals, finishing third at the 2024 Teqball Championship World Qualifier held in Aba, Abia State.
Participating in three finals out of five events in the championship, Whales' captain Ibinabo Alex Georgewill and Gladys Abasi defeated their Ondo State counterparts 2-0 in the Women’s Doubles final to clinch gold and secure a spot in the Teqball World Championship slated for the United States of America.
Benjamin Akubo congratulated the state Teqball team for bringing glory to Rivers State in their maiden national campaign.
The State Director of Sports expressed that Teqball can now be regarded as one of the relevant sports associations in the state because they have demonstrated capability and success with this recent achievement.
On his part, the Vice Chairman of the Rivers State Teqball Association, Halim Zaccah Adebola, thanked the Sports Director for his warm reception and encouragement.
Halim Zaccah promised that the association will embark on more Teqball activities across Rivers State while assuring that the Whales will bring more laurels to the state.
Teqball is played on a specially curved table. Similar to table tennis, players hit a football back and forth with any part of their body except their arms and hands. It can be played between two players as a singles event or between four players as a doubles event.
The game is represented at the international level by the International Teqball Federation (FITEQ).
