The Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Barrister Christopher Green, said the state has received the officials and players of the Rivers State Teqball team following their triumph at the 2024 Teqball Championship World Qualifier in Aba, Abia State.
The Teqball team, led by the Director of Sports in Rivers State, Ibigoni Benjamin-Akobo, presented their trophies and medals to the Sports Commissioner in his office.
In their first-ever national appearance, the Rivers Whales Teqball team won one gold and two silver medals, finishing third at the Championship.
Participating in three finals out of the five events of the Championship, Whales' Captain Ibinabo Georgewill and Gladys Abasi clinched gold in the Women’s Doubles final, securing a spot in the Teqball World Championship, which is slated for a yet-to-be-announced venue in November 2024.
"It's a good thing to get engaged in something that is profitable. You've engaged yourselves positively, and what you have done is going to be an eye-opener. You're bringing awareness of this sport to Rivers State," Barr. Green noted.
"If you can't play football to a certain level, you may have special skills to play Teqball. I want to commend you because this feat didn't come easily, with just a few months of preparation.
"It's a step in the right direction. I want to commend and appreciate you for bringing glory to Rivers State.
"Rivers State is fast becoming the hub of sports in Nigeria. It's good to have you.
"Thank you, and I'll see what we can do. We'll talk to you at the appropriate time very soon," Green concluded.
Regarding their request to host the 2024 Teqball Annual General Meeting (AGM), Green told the state Teqball officials that Rivers State will consider the possibility of staging such an event.
For his part, the Chairman of the Rivers State Teqball Association, Wuwu Gomba, thanked the Sports Commissioner for his warm reception and encouragement.
He promised the Commissioner that the Rivers Whales Teqball team will bring more trophies to Rivers State.
Teqball is played like table tennis, with two separate teams or individuals on either end of the table attempting to win points by hitting a football back and forth at their opponents.
