Rickie Fowler secured his first PGA Tour title in four years by winning the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit after a thrilling three-way playoff on Sunday. The 34-year-old American finished tied with Adam Hadwin and Collin Morikawa at 24 under par after 72 holes.
However, Fowler emerged as the victor by sinking a crucial birdie putt on the first playoff hole, while both Hadwin and Morikawa fell short with their attempts.
After his triumph, Fowler expressed his elation, stating that it was challenging to put his feelings into words. He acknowledged that he had been playing well and believed that a victory was imminent. Despite encountering difficulties in previous weekends when in contention, Fowler remained confident in his abilities.
Fowler's last PGA Tour victory came at the 2017 Players Championship. However, his ranking plummeted to 185th in the world last year. This season, he regained his form, with nine top-20 finishes in his past ten events, including a tied fifth-place finish at the US Open in June.
Entering the final round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic, Fowler held a share of the lead at 20 under par, eager to claim his first win since the 2019 Phoenix Open. Hadwin and Morikawa provided stiff competition, with Morikawa producing an impressive eight-under 64 to challenge the leaders.
To secure a spot in the playoff, Fowler needed a birdie on the 18th hole, which he delivered with composure. As the playoff began, Fowler recovered from a wayward drive with a remarkable shot out of the rough, followed by a smooth putt for another birdie, ultimately sealing his victory.
England's Aaron Rai, who had been in contention after three rounds, finished joint-ninth on 18 under par after recording a score of 71 in the final round.
