Rickie Fowler Considers Fall Schedule After Strong Performance

Posted : 29 October 2024

Rickie Fowler embarked on a lengthy journey back to Florida from Japan on Monday, likely using the time in the air to consider whether to expand his fall tournament schedule. Just two weeks ago, Fowler found himself ranked 111th in the FedEx Cup Fall standings. However, after securing a solo fourth place at the Zozo Championship on Sunday, he surged to No. 92, showcasing a significant improvement in his performance.

Fowler's recent success followed a T23 finish at the Shriners Children's Open and a T16 at the Sanderson Farms Championship. After a prolonged break from competitive golf, he had committed to three fall events to enhance his playing status for the 2025 season. With only three tournaments left in the eight-event FedEx Cup Fall schedule, he won't be participating in this week's World Wide Technology Championship in Mexico, which limits his immediate opportunities to further improve his ranking.

This leaves Fowler with the Butterfield Bermuda Championship and potentially the RSM Classic as his last chances to boost his standings. While he is set to participate in the Grant Thornton Invitational in mid-December—a mixed-team event co-sanctioned by the LPGA Tour—this particular tournament does not award FedEx Cup points, making it less beneficial for his ranking ambitions. The top 125 players at the end of the season will maintain full exemption for 2025, and while Fowler is likely to finish within this group, those ranked 51-60 will qualify for exclusive early-season events.

During his time in Japan, Fowler did not explicitly discuss his plans for additional events but expressed satisfaction with his performance at the Zozo Championship. He managed to shoot four rounds of 68 or better, achieving at least one top-10 finish for the 16th consecutive year on the PGA Tour. "I’m excited about the way I've been able to play the few events that I've played this fall," Fowler remarked after his impressive round of 64, which tied for the low round of the day.

Fowler's performance in Japan also had a positive impact on his global ranking, elevating him seven spots to No. 66 in the Official World Golf Ranking. Despite this improvement, he acknowledges that he still has work to do to qualify for major events beyond The Players Championship next year. Reflecting on his time in contention during the Zozo Championship, Fowler noted, "This one was great being back kind of in contention. I was a little too far back, never got close enough."
