The return of the US Open to Los Angeles after a 75-year absence brought a thrilling first round filled with remarkable achievements. Record lows, two holes-in-one, and an impressive performance by Rory McIlroy highlighted the tournament.
California natives Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele took the early lead, both carding an impressive 62 to finish at eight under par. Former champions Dustin Johnson and McIlroy were in close pursuit but stumbled on their final holes, ending the day at six and five under respectively.
The excitement continued with Frenchman Mathieu Pavon and American Sam Burns both achieving holes-in-one on the 15th hole, marking the 49th and 50th aces in the history of the championship. Wyndham Clark finished strong with a birdie on the last hole, carding a 64 to join Johnson at six under. Brian Harman matched McIlroy's impressive round of 65 to stay level with the Northern Irishman.
Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau, adding to the star-studded leaderboard, trailed by five shots. Meanwhile, a frustrated Jon Rahm posted a solid 69.
