Remco Evenepoel Predicts Belgium Victory, Prepares for Tour de France Debut

Posted : 27 June 2024

Belgian cycling star Remco Evenepoel sparked laughter on Thursday when asked about the upcoming Euro 2024 last 16 match between France and Belgium. Evenepoel, who previously captained Belgium's under-16 football team before switching to cycling, humorously predicted a 4-0 victory for Belgium as he prepared for his Tour de France debut.

Evenepoel, the current world time trial champion, recently compared his rival Tadej Pogacar's team to Real Madrid, and likened his own Soudal Quick-Step team to Manchester City. He noted that while his team lacks Real Madrid's extensive experience, they possess significant mental strength and ambition.

As the Tour de France kicks off in Florence, Evenepoel will be supported by a strong team, including three climbers, three tough rollers, and a sprinter. During the pre-race parade in Florence, Evenepoel, wearing a red face mask as a precaution against COVID-19, reflected on his rivals' chances, highlighting Primoz Roglic and defending champion Jonas Vingegaard, but reserving special praise for two-time former champion Tadej Pogacar as the main contender.

The Tour de France's first four days will showcase Italian landscapes, starting in Florence and crossing the Rubicon River, visiting Rimini's seaside, traveling through Bologna via the Via Romagna, and eventually moving from Turin to France for the remaining stages. The route includes two crossings of the Alps, seven mountain stages, a first-ever race on white gravel, and concludes with an individual time trial from Monaco to Nice along the French Riviera, bypassing Paris due to the Olympic Games.
