Regan Grace Set to Make Wales Debut Against the Reds

Posted : 17 July 2024

Former rugby league star Regan Grace is set to make his Wales debut against the Reds after being named in the starting lineup by coach Warren Gatland on Wednesday. Grace, who previously played for St Helens and represented Wales six times in rugby league, made the switch to union in 2022 but has faced serious injuries since then. Alongside him, four other players—prop Kemsley Mathias, hooker Evan Lloyd, No 8 Mackenzie Martin, and centre Eddie James—will also earn their first starts for Wales during Friday's match in Brisbane.

Replacement hooker Efan Daniel could make his debut off the bench as part of a revamped team following two consecutive test defeats to the Wallabies. Lock Cory Hill will captain the side, stepping in as Dewi Lake, who led Wales in the recent tests against Australia, is not included in the 23-man squad. Gatland emphasized the importance of giving players on tour a chance to contribute, whether as starters or substitutes, despite some being unavailable due to injuries.

The match against the Reds marks a significant occasion, being their first home game against a national team in 20 years and the first meeting with Wales since 1991. The Reds' squad features Wallabies James O'Connor and Jock Campbell, while key Australian players Liam Wright and Tate McDermott are on duty against Georgia this weekend. With this match, Wales aims to showcase their potential and gain valuable experience on the field.

Wales Starting XV: Cameron Winnett; Rio Dyer, Nick Tompkins, Eddie James, Regan Grace; Sam Costelow, Gareth Davies; Mackenzie Martin, Taine Plumtree, Christ Tshiunza; Cory Hill (capt), Matthew Screech; Archie Griffin, Evan Lloyd, Kemsley Mathias.
