Players were taken aback by the surprise agreement with LIV, a circuit backed by Saudi Arabia, as they were not consulted or informed prior to the media announcement on Tuesday.
Dan Rapaport of Barstool Sport spoke with multiple players who expressed their disappointment and anger immediately after learning about the deal with the rival circuit.
"The initial reaction was shock and then it turned to anger," he said.
"There are a lot of players who turned down a lot of money who are wondering 'what's the deal?'"
"It's been a total mess and they will present it as they've made the warring fairways peaceful again, but they've still got a long way to run," he said.
"Forget about growing the game and sportswashing, all this comes down to money and power."
Amid ongoing discussions and pending litigation with the breakaway tour LIV, the PGA Tour has decided to merge its commercial operations and rights with the rival circuit.
This agreement will establish a new for-profit company, led by PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan as the chief executive, while Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the governor of the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF) that supports LIV, will serve as the chairman of the newly formed entity
