Poston Leads After First Round of PGA Tour's American Express

Posted : 17 January 2025

J.T. Poston shot a stellar 10-under-par 62 to take a one-shot lead after the first round of the PGA Tour's American Express tournament in La Quinta, California. The 31-year-old, aiming for his fourth career PGA Tour victory, capped off his round with a sensational finish to surpass the competition on a day marked by low scores.

Poston played flawlessly on the par-72 Nicklaus Tournament course, a track that was one of three used in the tournament's opening rounds. After starting on the back nine, he turned in a strong 4-under performance, highlighted by four early birdies. A brief setback on the 10th hole, where he bogeyed, didn’t derail his momentum. He quickly regained control with three consecutive birdies, followed by a birdie-eagle-birdie streak to finish his round.

Reflecting on his round, Poston praised his ball striking, particularly his iron play, which was sharp throughout the day. Despite missing a few short putts on the front nine, Poston felt his game was in excellent form. "It was just one of those days where everything was sort of clicking," he said. He’s aware, however, that the tournament is far from over, with many players still in contention.

Justin Lower trails by just one shot after shooting a bogey-free 63. Lower's round featured an extraordinary highlight—back-to-back eagles on the par-five fifth and sixth holes, both achieved from the fairway. Five players are tied for third place at 8-under, including Jason Day and Matti Schmid, who both posted impressive rounds. Day rebounded from an early bogey, while Schmid’s 64 included eight birdies and no bogeys.
