Portuguese veteran Rui Costa triumphs in thrilling Stage 15 of La Vuelta

Posted : 10 September 2023
In an exciting stage of La Vuelta, Portuguese veteran Rui Costa secured his first Grand Tour stage win since the 2023 Tour de France. He outmaneuvered his breakaway companions, Lennard Kamna and Santiago Buitrago, to claim the victory in Stage 15. Costa showcased tactical prowess by not collaborating with Buitrago during the climb and then unleashing a powerful sprint in the final kilometer, narrowly beating Kamna.

Lennard Kamna, who had gained a slight advantage over Buitrago and Costa, crashed on the descent, but Costa's racecraft brought him back into contention. Kamna put up a strong fight in the sprint but couldn't hold off Costa, resulting in the Portuguese rider's victory.

This win marks Costa's fourth professional victory for Intermarché–Circus–Wanty and is his most successful season since 2013. The stage featured Remco Evenepoel's early attacks and an animated breakaway, with Evenepoel, Costa, and others trying to form a group to contest the stage. Despite Jumbo-Visma's efforts to control the breakaway, a group of 15 riders, including Kamna, Buitrago, and Kron, fought for the stage victory.

Costa's tactical maneuvering and Kamna's crash on the descent added drama to the stage's conclusion. Costa saved energy by using various tactics and ultimately secured the win in the final sprint. Evenepoel and the breakaway riders finished just 2 seconds behind the leaders, making for an intense and closely contested stage.

In the overall general classification (GC), the top riders remained unchanged, with Sepp Kuss maintaining the red jersey. The GC battle didn't see any significant action on this stage, as the final climb proved relatively straightforward. Kuss, Roglic, and Vingegaard continue to hold the top three positions in the GC, appearing poised for an historic 1-2-3 finish at La Vuelta a Espana.

Stage 15 showcased Costa's racing intelligence and determination, providing an exciting day of racing for fans of La Vuelta.
