Portugal caused a Rugby World Cup upset in Toulouse, securing their first World Cup victory with a late converted try by Rodrigo Marta. The result was a shocker for Fiji, who needed only one point from the match to advance to the quarter-finals.
Fiji had led 23-17 late in the game, with Portugal trailing by seven points on two occasions in the second half. Levani Botia and Mesake Doge's tries had brought Fiji level, and two Frank Lomani penalties had put them in a winning position. However, Portugal produced a stunning late twist with Rodrigo Marta's converted try, sealing their historic World Cup win.
Despite the loss, Fiji advanced to the quarter-finals to face England, the winners of Pool D, in Marseille on Sunday, October 15. Both teams had experienced some late struggles in the pool phase, setting the stage for an intriguing last-eight clash. Portugal, on the other hand, exited the tournament with their heads held high, finally rewarded for their enterprising style of rugby that had earned them admiration throughout the competition.
