The R&A has expressed interest in potentially hosting The Open or Women's Open at Portmarnock Golf Club in the Republic of Ireland. Portmarnock recently contacted the R&A, expressing its desire to explore the possibility of hosting one of these major championships. The club hopes for support from the Irish government in making a formal approach to the R&A.
An R&A spokesperson acknowledged Portmarnock's status as an outstanding links course and the potential to host major championships there. However, they emphasized the need for a thorough evaluation to assess feasibility and requirements for such an event. While The Open and Women's Open have historically been held in the United Kingdom, other R&A events, including the Men's Amateur Championship, have been played at Portmarnock.
Rory McIlroy had previously suggested that the R&A was seriously considering the idea of hosting The Open outside the UK. Portmarnock's club captain, Niall Goulding, highlighted the importance of government support for a project of this magnitude and indicated the club's intention to approach relevant government authorities to gauge their willingness to provide support for a formal application to host a major championship at Portmarnock.
