Piercy, Highsmith lead in rain-interrupted Puerto Rico Open

Posted : 08 March 2024

Scott Piercy and Joe Highsmith seized the clubhouse lead at the PGA Tour's Puerto Rico Open, where the first round was disrupted by rain delays. Piercy's impressive round included an eagle on the par-4 14th, where he holed out from the fairway, contributing to his seven-under 65 at Grande Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande.

Despite three bogeys, Piercy closed with three consecutive birdies before the worst of the rain, expressing satisfaction with his overall performance. On the other hand, Highsmith had a bogey-free round of 65, navigating smoothly through the course and emphasizing his success in sticking to his process throughout the day.

While play resumed after a two-hour rain delay, bad light hindered some players from completing their rounds. Despite the interruptions, Piercy highlighted his strong shots and effective play on challenging holes, securing his position at the top.

Highsmith, in contrast, attributed his success to staying out of trouble, making early putts, and maintaining momentum throughout the day. Following closely, four players, including Americans Brice Garnett, Erik Barnes, and Kevin Streelman, along with South African Garrick Higgo, were just one stroke behind the leaders.

Among the contenders in the group a further shot back were players like Japan's Satoshi Kodaira, Ryo Hisatune, Denmark's Rasmus Hojgaard, Scotland's Martin Laird, German Matti Schmid, and local favorite Rafael Campos.

The Puerto Rico Open, held opposite the prestigious Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, provides an opportunity for emerging talents to showcase their skills alongside the top talent competing in the PGA Tour's signature events.
