Pidcock Triumphs in Thrilling Olympic Mountain Bike Race

Posted : 29 July 2024

The 24-year-old world champion showcased his exceptional bike handling skills to first close a 40-second gap and then fend off Koretzky in a thrilling last-lap battle on the 4.4km Elancourt Hill circuit. The intense competition saw Pidcock and Koretzky go wheel-to-wheel down a narrow descent, where Pidcock's aggressive line through the trees gave him the edge as Koretzky lost momentum.

Seizing the opportunity, Pidcock powered to a dramatic victory by nine seconds, although he was met with boos from the French crowd as he crossed the finish line ahead of Koretzky and South Africa's Alan Hatherly, who claimed the bronze. Hatherly's medal marked Team South Africa's second of the Olympics, following the Blitzboks' bronze in rugby sevens.

Reflecting on the crowd's reaction, Pidcock expressed disappointment, stating, "It's a shame because that's not really the spirit of the Olympics, but I do also understand, they're a passionate French crowd." He added humorously, "But you know they didn't boo the rock that gave me a puncture did they," referring to an earlier setback on lap four.

Pidcock's decisive last-lap maneuver, which nearly sealed his win, was justified in his eyes. "I did nothing wrong. He could have also gone left and I would have had to go right. In this position, you don't hesitate. The gap was there so I was going," he explained. Meanwhile, the women's race saw a dominant victory by Pauline Ferrand-Prevot, igniting celebrations from the home crowd. Despite the French fans' hopes for more gold, Pidcock's tenacity and skill ultimately broke their hearts.
