PGA Tour plan 36-event FedEx Cup season in 2024, $25 million for winner, 70 players, aligns with PIF

The PGA Tour has announced that the FedEx Cup will revert to a 36-event season in 2024, with the play-off champion receiving an unprecedented $25 million (£19.5 million) bonus.
The upcoming season is set to kick off in January and conclude in August, featuring a progression of 70 players to the play-offs stage.
In a surprising development this June, the PGA Tour and DP World Tour merged, aligning with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF). However, the details of the agreement with PIF-funded LIV Golf remain unresolved.
The prize for the FedEx Cup champion will see a boost from the current $18 million (£14 million) to $25 million. Rory McIlroy from Northern Ireland clinched his third FedEx Cup victory in 2022, making him the first player to achieve this feat during the PGA Tour's Tour Championship.
The play-offs, which start this Thursday, involve three tournaments culminating in the 30-player Tour Championship held at East Lake in Atlanta, Georgia. While Jon Rahm leads the leaderboard heading into the 2023 play-offs, Justin Thomas faced disappointment as he missed out on a play-off spot by a single shot due to a heartbreaking last-hole incident at the Wyndham Championship.
The 2024 season will launch with The Sentry event in Hawaii and encompass eight "signature" events featuring limited participant fields.
Among these are three player-hosted invitationals: The Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational, and Memorial. These events will include a 36-hole cut and elevated prize money.
The remaining five events - The Sentry, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, RBC Heritage, Wells Fargo Championship, and Travelers Championship - will have no cut.
PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan expressed that the revised schedule will provide fans with more frequent opportunities to witness top players competing against each other.
