PGA Tour, LIV Golf & DP World Tour merger update: Demands for Jay Monahan's resignation increases
Posted : 07 June 2023
During an intense and heated players meeting, PGA Tour chief Jay Monahan faced calls to resign following the unexpected merger with LIV Golf.
The merger led to several players leaving the American PGA Tour and the European-based DP World Tour to join the Saudi Arabia-backed Liv circuit, which launched last year.
Previously, Monahan had stated that those who joined LIV would not be welcomed back on the PGA Tour. The meeting took place before the RBC Canadian Open in Toronto and was marked by intense discussions.
Rory McIlroy, the world number three from Northern Ireland and a staunch defender of the PGA Tour, is expected to address the media regarding the situation.
"I recognise that people are going to call me a hypocrite," Monahan said.
The PGA Tour and LIV have signed an agreement to merge their commercial operations and rights into a new for-profit company, putting an end to pending litigation between the two tours.
However, the announcement caught many players off guard, leading to a backlash of anger. The details regarding the future structure of the tours are still unknown at this time.
"(Monahan) just sort of explained the structure, how it's going to look going forward.” Former US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy said
"He didn't really talk specifics. It was a tough meeting for both sides because nobody really knows what this is going to look like in the end."
