Perrine Delacour surged to the top in the first round of the Portland Classic, shooting an impressive 9-under 63 despite morning rain. The French golfer, still seeking her first LPGA Tour victory, began with a birdie and continued with five consecutive birdies from the 3rd to the 7th hole, concluding the front nine with a 30. Delacour maintained her momentum with birdies on the 14th, 15th, and 17th holes, completing a bogey-free round on the tree-lined course.
Gina Kim was in second place after an excellent bogey-free 64, her best score on the LPGA Tour. Kim, also winless on the tour and amid a tough season with five consecutive missed cuts, expressed her excitement and noted that her hard work was finally paying off.
Nelly Korda, currently ranked second, was at 65 along with Linn Grant and Olivia Cowan. Korda, returning to form after battling lower-back pain earlier in the year, expressed her focus on this week's tournament before shifting her attention to the Solheim Cup in Spain.
Defending champion Andrea Lee shot a 66, tied with Megan Khang, Nanna Koerstz Madsen, Sarah Kemp, and Pavarisa Yoktuan. Khang, coming off her first LPGA Tour win in Vancouver, emphasized a positive mentality despite the rain.
Angela Stanford, at 45 years old, posted a 67 and expressed her affection for the golf course. Two-time champion Brooke Henderson finished with a 69.
Top-ranked Lilia Vu began with a 71, while Lexi Thompson struggled, bogeying the final two holes to finish with a 72. Thompson, currently outside the top 150 in the Race to CME Globe, faces challenges in retaining her full LPGA card for the next year.
