Pelayo Sanchez clinched his inaugural Grand Tour stage victory by outpacing two-time world champion Julian Alaphilippe to triumph on stage six of the Giro d'Italia. The 24-year-old Spaniard expressed astonishment as he crossed the finish line first in Rapolano Terme, prevailing over the Frenchman in an uphill sprint.
While Sanchez savored his triumph, Jayco Alula's Luke Plapp, the third member of their breakaway, relinquished a bit of ground near the finish but still secured a spot on the podium. Despite the formidable competition, Sanchez's determination and strategic patience propelled him to the pinnacle of the stage.
Maintaining his dominance, two-time Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar continued to lead the overall standings for the sixth consecutive day, holding a 46-second advantage over Britain's Geraint Thomas.
Reflecting on his victory, Sanchez attributed his success to tactical awareness and resilience amid the grueling terrain, which included the challenging white gravel roads of Tuscany reminiscent of the Strade Bianchi race.
With stage seven looming, featuring a demanding 38.5km individual time trial from Foligno to Perugia culminating in a steep 6.6km climb, the Giro d'Italia promises further exhilarating battles among cycling's elite.
