Nigeria's Rafiatu Lawal experienced mixed emotions after being eliminated from the women’s 59-kilogram weightlifting event at the Paris 2024 Olympics. In an interview on the sidelines, Lawal shared that she felt both sad and happy after finishing fifth in the competition with a total score of 230 kilograms, comprising 100 kilograms in the snatch and 130 kilograms in the clean and jerk. Although she finished ahead of six competitors in the 12-lifter field, she was disappointed to fall short of a medal.
Lawal expressed regret over not performing better in the snatch, which she had hoped would secure a higher result. She noted that despite her hard work and preparation, she felt she could have achieved more. However, she also acknowledged that competing without injuries and gaining experience were positives from the event.
Despite her disappointment, Lawal expressed gratitude for her Olympic debut and for the support she received throughout her journey. She reflected on the significance of her participation and the lessons learned, expressing faith in her future endeavors. “I am grateful to God for the opportunity to compete and to everyone who supported me,” the 27-year-old said.
Lawal concluded by thanking those who supported her with prayers and encouragement, emphasizing her appreciation for their contributions to her achievements. She remains hopeful for future success and acknowledges that her next steps will be guided by faith.
