Paris 2024: Ben Proud wins silver in 50m freestyle; Cameron McEvoy wins gold

Posted : 03 August 2024

At the Paris 2024 Olympics, Ben Proud of Great Britain secured a silver medal in the men's 50m freestyle, falling short to Australia's Cameron McEvoy. McEvoy emerged as the victor with a time of 21.25 seconds, narrowly edging out Proud, who finished second with a time of 21.30 seconds. French swimmer Florent Manaudou, the 2012 Olympic gold medallist, claimed the bronze medal with a time of 21.56 seconds.

The final also saw the defeat of Caeleb Dressel, the gold medallist from Tokyo 2020, who did not make it to the podium this time around. Despite Dressel’s high expectations, it was McEvoy's final surge that secured his victory, leaving Proud to settle for silver. Proud had entered the competition as the 2022 World and Commonwealth champion, carrying the weight of his previous fifth-place finish in Tokyo.

Proud, who had won the event at the British Championships to qualify for the Games, showed strong initial performance but was ultimately overpowered by McEvoy’s final burst. Jordan Crooks from the Cayman Islands was the fastest off the blocks but failed to maintain his lead, fading towards the end of the race.

The final race was a thrilling contest, and Proud’s silver medal marks a significant achievement in his career, despite not surpassing McEvoy. Manaudou's bronze, on the other hand, delighted the local crowd at La Defense Arena, showcasing his continued excellence in the sport.

Proud's performance with a time of 21.30 seconds was impressive but not enough to surpass McEvoy's 21.25 seconds. Manaudou’s third-place finish edged out Canadian Josh Liendo, who finished fourth with a time of 21.58 seconds.

The men’s 50m freestyle final at Paris 2024 proved to be an exciting race with a close finish. McEvoy’s victory highlights his exceptional skill and determination, while Proud's silver medal is a testament to his remarkable form and competitive spirit.

The event showcased the high level of competition in swimming, with all participants delivering strong performances. The outcome of the race reflects the intense preparation and skill required to excel at the highest levels of the sport.
