The last major event on the calendar of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF), the Janet Adowei Memorial Scrabble Classics (JAMSC), will feature higher quality, better organization, and a bigger prize purse for the players.
This is the verdict of the convener and initiator of the Memorial Scrabble Classics, Engineer Ebikeme Adowei, in a chat with your authoritative and award-winning news channel in Lagos.

Adowei, a petroleum engineer, explained that last year, the 4th edition of the Classics coincided with the West African Scrabble Championship in Lagos, so Nigeria’s top 15 players could not participate in the event as they were representing the country.
“Last year, the likes of Enoch Nwali and Oluwatimilehin Doko were unable to compete at the Memorial Scrabble Classics due to their involvement with Team Nigeria at the West African Scrabble Championship. This year, we hope to have the finest wordsmiths from Nigeria, and by extension Africa, for the competition,” Adowei said.
Already, the 2022 African Scrabble Champion and the Ultimate Scrabble Showdown winner, Enoch Nwali, has registered for the Classics, which will be held on the 16th and 17th of this month at the Chevron Recreational Club, Gbagada.
Besides having a very powerful field, the 5th edition of the JAMSC will feature a bigger prize fund of over N3.5 million and better organization.
“We have put in place a very robust, dynamic, and proactive team under the stewardship of Hakeem Olaribigbe, supported by Khaleel Adedeji, to handle the organization of the Classics,” the petroleum engineer stated.
The President of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF), Engineer Toke Aka, is leading a high-powered, passionate cast of mind game stakeholders and dignitaries to the competition, which is gradually building a formidable reputation for itself among a plethora of competitions in the NSF circuit.
The Vice President of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF), Bright Idahosa, is another heavyweight, a scrabble enthusiast and administrator who will be in attendance. Idahosa, the South-South representative on the NSF board, has been pulling the right strings to help Scrabble thrive in the country.
Recently, he financially supported some members of Team Nigeria to make the long and rewarding trip to the African Scrabble Championship in Kigali, Rwanda. He also played a key role in the maiden edition of the All Nigeria Amazons Scrabble Championship and the 2024 South-South National Open Championship.
Engineer Toke Aka and Bright Idahosa will be joined by another pillar of Scrabble dignitaries at the Janet Adowei Scrabble Classics: Emmanuel Egbele, the South West representative on the NSF board and the convener of the prestigious Emmanuel Egbele Annual Scrabble Tournament (EEAST).
Multiple national champion and the players' representative on the NSF board, Segun Durojaye, has already registered for the Classics, which is expected to accommodate over 150 players across three categories.
One of Africa’s finest Scrabble Technical Directors, who is also the Technical Director of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation, John Curtis, will also grace the occasion.
