Louis Oosthuizen has identified Thriston Lawrence as a promising contender for South Africa’s next Major championship win. Lawrence has enjoyed an impressive year, recently breaking into the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking and currently sitting second in the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai Rankings. His strong form was further highlighted by a tied-second finish at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, marking his fifth runner-up result on the DP World Tour this year.
Speaking at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, Oosthuizen praised Lawrence’s performances, particularly at The Open, and expressed confidence in his potential to excel in future Majors. Oosthuizen noted Lawrence’s ability to handle windy and challenging conditions, qualities that could make him a strong contender at The Open in the coming years. According to Oosthuizen, Lawrence’s recent achievements and consistent ball striking make him a player to watch closely.
Oosthuizen himself is pursuing a personal milestone at this week’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. As the reigning champion of the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa, following his triumph at Leopard Creek last year, he is now aiming to achieve the rare "Dunhill Double" – a feat only one other player has accomplished. Fellow South African Branden Grace holds the distinction of winning both the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and the Alfred Dunhill Championship, doing so in 2012 and 2014.
Oosthuizen expressed his excitement about the opportunity, emphasizing how special the week is due to the camaraderie with friends and amateurs. He mentioned that while the social aspect of the event is important, should he find himself playing well, his focus will shift to securing a tournament victory and possibly matching Grace’s historic achievement.
