Olympic organizers have cancelled a second day of triathlon training scheduled for Monday in the River Seine due to water pollution caused by heavy rainfall over the weekend. Paris 2024 officials and World Triathlon announced that the decision was made because the water quality did not meet the necessary standards for safe training. The cancellation follows a similar decision for Sunday’s session due to elevated pollution levels.
The triathlon events, including the men’s individual race on Tuesday and the women’s individual race on Wednesday, are set to be the first Olympic competitions held in the Seine. The quality of the water is highly sensitive to rainfall, which, as seen during the recent Games' opening ceremony, can overwhelm the city's sewage system and result in untreated waste being discharged into the river.
Despite these setbacks, organizers remain optimistic about the water quality improving in time for the events, given the forecasted weather conditions for the next 48 hours. The heavy rains from Friday and Saturday have subsided, with clear skies returning to Paris, which should help in mitigating the pollution.
Paris 2024 has contingency plans in place, including the potential to delay outdoor swimming events or relocate the marathon swimming to Vaires-sur-Marne, if necessary. French authorities have invested significantly in cleaning the Seine, with Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo and Paris 2024 chief Tony Estanguet previously demonstrating the river’s readiness for the Olympics by swimming in it in July.
