Laura Kenny, the five-time gold medallist in track cycling, is eyeing a fourth Olympics in Paris next year, aiming for a comeback after the birth of her second son, Monty, in the summer. Kenny, who had her first child, Albie, in 2017, sees this comeback as a personal choice and a determination to continue her cycling career despite additional parenting responsibilities.
If selected, it would be Kenny's fourth Olympic appearance, and the first without her husband Jason, who retired as a seven-time champion and is now part of the men's coaching set-up. Kenny emphasizes that she wants her children to see her as someone who was determined to balance both motherhood and a successful cycling career.
In an interview with The Journey, the Team GB and Toyota docuseries, Kenny expressed her desire to compete in the next Olympics, acknowledging that some may find it challenging to understand her decision. She wants to avoid the regret of not trying and hopes her children see her as someone who made both aspects of her life work.
Kenny differentiates her two comebacks, stating that with Albie, she felt she had a point to prove about being a mom and an Olympic champion simultaneously. However, this time, she's making a comeback for herself, driven by her love for cycling.
Kenny faces roughly seven months to prove her worth to selectors for Olympic qualification, which operates on a quota system. The final decision rests with British Cycling and the British Olympic Association.
Kenny also opened up about the challenges she faced during an ectopic pregnancy last year, which followed a miscarriage in 2021. Describing the experience as "terrifying," she emphasized the mental struggles afterward, stating that she wasn't truly happy until she fell pregnant with Monty.
