The Sunshine Tour will conclude its season with the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open, a tournament that has seen three South African champions across its seven editions. Among South African professionals, Oliver Bekker stands out as the best player yet to win this event. Bekker will travel to Mont Choisy Le Golf in Grand Baie, Mauritius, from December 19-22, hoping to secure a much-deserved victory in this Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour tournament, where he has consistently performed well.
Bekker boasts an impressive track record at the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open, having participated in every edition and finishing outside the top 10 only twice. His notable finishes include eighth, 18th, ninth, seventh, ninth, seventh, and 34th. "I generally play well in Mauritius. It’s a place where I feel very comfortable playing," Bekker remarked. He appreciates the opportunity to unwind after a demanding year, enjoying the beach and recharging away from the pressures of the sport.
He will look forward to returning to Mont Choisy Le Golf, particularly after finishing seventh behind France's Antoine Rozner in 2022. That year, Bekker began with a strong 64, positioning himself just two shots off the first-round lead. Heading into the final round, he was only three shots behind Rozner, demonstrating his competitiveness at this venue.
Other South African golfers have also performed well in the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open, including George Coetzee, Dylan Frittelli, and Louis Oosthuizen, who have claimed victories. Thomas Aiken, Brandon Stone, Louis de Jager, and Jayden Schaper have also posted impressive finishes without winning. However, Bekker’s consistent record makes him a standout candidate deserving of this title, further establishing his legacy in South African golf.
