Okonofua emerges champion of 2024 IBB Independence Golf tourney

Posted : 03 October 2024

Isaiah Okonofua has emerged as the champion of the 2024 IBB Independence Golf Tournament at the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja.

No fewer than 400 players from Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, and Cameroon competed for honors at the prestigious event.

The tournament, which started with a tennis competition on September 15, concluded Nigeria's Independence Day celebrations with the announcement of winners in various categories.

Okonofua, a member of the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja, emerged as the overall winner of the 64th Nigeria Independence Anniversary Golf event.

In a standout performance, playing off a handicap of 9, the amateur golfer shot a 75 gross with a best net of 66, beating over 400 contestants to claim the coveted trophy.

Okonofua told journalists during the prize/award presentation ceremony that he was humbled and honored to have won this year’s tournament.

“I was nervous at the beginning because when I saw the draw, I realized I was paired with two professional golfers. Being an amateur playing alongside two strong professionals, I knew I had to be at the top of my game. However, I started poorly due to my nerves, but I reminded myself not to compare my game with the pros'. From then on, things turned around, and I kept improving with every hole, playing my best golf ever at the IBBIGCC," he said.

He added that the week-long event, celebrating the 64th Independence Anniversary of Nigeria, had been exciting and fulfilling.

Okonofua also expressed his joy at representing the country in the single and double match play, where Nigeria defeated Ghana to emerge champions.

In other results, P. Uzezi, who played off a handicap of 10, shot an 80 gross to win the best gross title, defeating E. Edoka on countback.

Godwin Okoko claimed the top prize in the male professional category, with a gross score of 68, earning a prize of N5 million.

Rachael Danjuma won the highest prize in the female professional category with a gross score of 80.

Uzezi also claimed the best gross award, playing off a handicap of 10 with an 80 gross, beating M. Suleiman on countback.

In the men's Division 1 category (handicap 0 to 10), S. I. Adebayo emerged as the winner, playing off a handicap of 10 with an 83 gross and 73 net.

In the ladies' Division 1 category, former IBB lady captain Grace Ihonvbere, playing off a handicap of 16, won the top prize with an 89 gross and 73 net.

In the Auxiliary category, Grace Agbo won the prize for the longest drive with a distance of 228 meters, while Francis Amuzu won the men's category with a distance of 296 meters.

Osaro Amadin took home the award for the nearest-to-the-pin ladies' category with a distance of 2.0 ft, while Silas Ahiaba won the men's category with the same distance of 2.0 ft.

The host captain, Ibrahim Babayo, praised all those who contributed to the success of the event, saying that this year’s tournament would go down in history as one of the most attended and well-organized.

"I would like to thank everyone who contributed to making this celebration a success, especially our sponsors who have been generous even in these difficult times. I also commend the Vice Captain, Dr. James Agbonhese, who doubles as the Chairman of the Organizing Committee, as well as the distinguished members of the Organizing Committee 2024. The course superintendent and his team are also appreciated for keeping the course in excellent condition, and most importantly, our members for their immense support," he said.

Dr. James Agbonhese, the chairman of the organizing committee and vice-captain of the club, noted that golf is becoming an important aspect of foreign policy in many countries, and Nigeria cannot afford to sit back.

He appreciated the guests and golf enthusiasts for honoring the club's invitation, adding that the tournament brought together golfers from diverse backgrounds, ages, and skill levels.

“Over the last few days, you must have had the chance to tackle our challenging but lush course and enjoy the refreshing hospitality. Whether you are a seasoned pro or an amateur enthusiast, it was an opportunity to showcase your skills, learn from others, and forge lasting connections during the various stages of the tournament.

"Our sponsors and partners have generously supported this event, and we are grateful for their commitment.

"To the participants, we hope your swings were smooth, your putts precise, and your enjoyment limitless.

"We thank God for the friendships fostered by this tournament, the celebration of our national pride, and the unforgettable memories created," he said.

The highlights of the day included the presentation of trophies and prizes to various winners.
