The President of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF), Dr. Ibrahim Abdul, has praised the Team Nigeria Weightlifters for their historic performance at the 2023 Africa Games Weightlifting event.
Nigerian weightlifters secured all nine gold medals in the three categories contested on Day 3 of the Weightlifting event at the University of Ghana, Legon, on Monday.
Adijat Olarinoye clinched three gold medals in the 55kg category, Rafiatu Lawal secured three gold medals in the 59kg category, and Edidiong Umoafia claimed all three gold medals in the 67kg men's class. The NWF President commended these achievements and expressed satisfaction with the team's performance.
Dr. Abdul attributed the success to the athletes' commitment and the federation's organizational plan. He urged them to continue striving to dominate Africa, emphasizing Nigeria's position as a dominant force in weightlifting.
"We started with five medals on Sunday, and today (Monday) we have nine gold medals. I am delighted, but the job has not yet been concluded. The commitment and sacrifices of the players are paying off, along with the organizational disposition of the federation. Nigeria is a dominant force in weightlifting, and that is what we are targeting in Accra," said Dr. Abdul.
He also praised the federal government, particularly the Ministry of Sports, for their efforts in organizing training camps for the athletes and ensuring their welfare.
In the 2019 Africa Games, Nigerian Weightlifters amassed a total of 50 medals, including 16 gold, 16 silver, and 18 bronze. As of now, Team Nigeria Weightlifting has won a total of 14 medals in the current competition—nine gold, two silver, and three bronze medals.
The medal pursuit continues, with Ruth Ayodele and Joy Eze competing in the 64kg and 71kg women's categories, respectively, at 10 am.
