Enoch Nwali has won the maiden edition of the prestigious and historic money-spinning Ultimate Scrabble Showdown tagged ‘Rewarding Excellence,’ concluded in Lagos.
Nwali defeated his schoolmate and teammate Oluwatimilehin Doko in the keenly contested showdown by 11 to 10 games at the competition, held in the small but alluring environment of Genesis Grid Homes in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.
Enoch Nwali, a final-year Health Education student at the University of Lagos, led from start to finish but was regularly reminded by his contender Doko that it wasn’t a stroll in the park throughout the three days of grueling, feisty, and equally scintillating competition.
It was 4-2 in favor of Nwali on Day 1. Doko, who arrived a few minutes before the start of the event due to a school test, matched Nwali on Day 2. It ended 6-6, entering the final day at 10-8 in favor of Nwali.
When everyone thought Enoch Nwali’s coronation was at hand on Day 2, Doko, in a show of resilience, doggedness, and the never-say-die spirit, played the final game of the day with the best he had, sealing it with a worldwide sigh of relief, winning by a margin of 6 points. It ended 453-447.
On the final day, Doko reduced the gap by beating his friend in game 19, 479-402, increasing the adrenaline in the gladiators’ systems by 200 percent. However, Nwali ended the contest with a 65-point margin win in game 20, 515-450.
The final game of the Ultimate Scrabble Showdown went to the West African Scrabble Championship (WASC) winner, Doko, at 384-320.
