Nigeria will secure a ticket in the upcoming qualifiers to participate in the women's Beach Volleyball category at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, assured Musa Nimrod, the President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF).
Nimrod mentioned that the team had been in camp since Monday to prepare for the qualifiers in Morocco.
He stated that the team would train rigorously to overcome their opponents and secure the ticket during the qualifiers in Morocco.
"The girls are determined to make the federation and the country proud by participating in the Olympics," Nimrod added. "They are vibrant young girls, ready to exert all their efforts to defeat any team that comes their way."
He acknowledged that they were defeated by Kenya and Egypt in the African Games in Ghana, but this time, they are prepared to put up a strong fight against any team to secure a ticket for the Olympics.
Nimrod reassured that the team of young players would qualify for the 2024 Olympics despite facing "several challenges."
He mentioned that the team would embark on a West Africa tour to intensify their training ahead of the Paris 2024 games.
"The preparation is underway; we will be going on a West African tour next week. They will visit Accra, Ghana; Lome, Cotonou, and then return to Badagry for their final camp," Nimrod explained. "We hope that this time, our team will be there to represent the country in the Paris 2024 Olympics."
The women's beach volleyball team won a bronze medal at the 13th African Games in Ghana, earning them a place in the qualifiers.
The beach volleyball players currently in camp include Esther Mbah (Nasarawa State University), Pamela Bawa (NY Spikers, Abuja), and Francisca Ikheide (Nigeria Customs Service), among others.
Their coaches are Kayode Ajilore and Christiana Amadi.
The host nation, France, automatically received one out of the 24 spots, while the United States – winners of the 2023 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships – also secured a spot.
The winners of each of the five continental confederations’ Olympic qualification events will earn one spot each.
NAN reports that the continental beach volleyball qualifiers will take place from June 19 to June 23 in Casablanca, Morocco.
