NJF set to hold maiden National Judo League, says President

Musa Oshodi, the President of the Nigeria Judo Federation (NJF), unveiled plans on Tuesday to host the first edition of the National Judo League.


Oshodi disclosed that this first-of-its-kind Judo League would be held at the Gymnasium, Package B, Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja, from October 25th to 28th.


He stated that the competition would draw judokas from across the country. 


"The arrival and accreditation of the participants (athletes and officials) from the six geo-political zones in the country will take place on October 25th, while the championship proper will be held from October 26th to 27th, 2024.


"The grand finale of the event will take place on Monday, October 28th, and it will feature the following, among other things:


"Celebration of 'World Judo Day,' an annual global festival held to commemorate the birthday of the founder of judo, Prof. Jigoro Kano.


"This event is also used as a means to propagate the spirit and values of judo," he said.


Oshodi also mentioned other activities lined up, including the presentation of prizes to the top two winners at the championship. The prizes are not only substantial but also enticing.


"The first prize is ₦1 million, the second prize is ₦700,000, and the third prize is ₦400,000.


"Additionally, there will be consolation prizes of ₦100,000 each for the last three zones, while the investiture ceremony will formally decorate the patrons and ambassadors of the federation at the event.


"The awardees include the Minister of Sport Development, John Enoh; Major General Z. L. Abubakar, Chief of Transformations and Innovation, Nigerian Army; and CP Olatunji Disu, Commissioner of Police, Abuja, as patrons.


"The list of ambassadors of judo in Nigeria who will also be honored at the event includes Mrs. Tinuke Watti, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Sport Development; Buk Johnson, CEO; and Bunmi Johnson, Associates," he said.


Oshodi also added other recipients, including Prof. Benjamin Kumai Gugong, Commissioner, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Bauchi State.


"To this end, the federation is soliciting the support of the media for generous coverage and publicity before, during, and after the events.


"We are also seeking financial support from high-net-worth individuals, groups, societies, and corporate bodies for the general aspirations of the federation," he concluded.
