The Kenya national women's hockey team, the Blades, had hopes of qualifying for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games, but those hopes were dashed as Nigeria qualified at their expense, defeating them 1-0 in the semi-finals of the ongoing Africa Hockey Olympic qualifiers in Pretoria, South Africa.
Nigeria's first-quarter goal was enough to beat the Blades and secure a spot in the African Hockey Women's final for the first time in history, keeping their Olympic dreams alive.
In the final, Nigeria will compete for the title against the winner between South Africa and Ghana, while Kenya will await the outcome of the match to determine their opponent in the third-place playoff.
Nigeria's Queenesther Njoku was delighted to see her country reach the final for the first time, attributing their success to their coaches. She expressed optimism that the team would win the final and secure a place in the Olympics.
"I am happy and delighted with the win. We were inspired by our coach, and we are grateful to have made it," she said.
Blades' captain, Lyne Kipsang, expressed regret for missed opportunities, especially from penalty corners. She, however, noted that the young team had learned valuable lessons from the tournament, including mental strength and seizing chances.
"Congratulations to Nigeria for the win. It was a bit tough for us because we missed a couple of chances, but we live to fight another day. The match was highly tense, but we learned not to concede a goal in the opening minutes," Kipsang said.
