Nigeria's Chess master, Onakoya, to organise chess tournament for Borno children

Posted : 02 September 2024

Tunde Onakoya, the Guinness World Record holder for the longest marathon chess game, has announced plans to organize a chess tournament for children in displaced persons camps in Maiduguri.

Onakoya made this announcement in Maiduguri while concluding his three-day visit to Borno, during which he promoted the game among children in collaboration with the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) and the Officers Mess Maiduguri Chess Club.

Onakoya, who is the founder and convener of “Chess in Slums Africa,” which focuses on providing interventions for children in Lagos slums, expressed his intention to replicate his Lagos initiatives in Borno.

The chess master, who visited two displaced persons camps in Maiduguri and engaged in a series of coaching games and lectures with the children, said he was impressed by the kids’ display of intelligence.

According to him, the proposed tournament would highlight the essence of his project to nurture a generation of thinkers.

He urged the government to include chess in the school curriculum to foster a generation of critical thinkers and problem solvers.

Onakoya mentioned that his visit to Maiduguri was his first trip to the North, and he was pleased to contribute to improving the intelligence level of vulnerable children in collaboration with the NAF.

Also speaking, Commander of the 105 Composite Group of NAF, Maiduguri Base, Air Commodore C.O. Olayera, praised Onakoya for the visit and his efforts to promote chess, which he said was worthwhile.

Olayera, who is also the patron of the NAF Officers Mess Chess Club, assured Onakoya of the club’s commitment to partnering with him in reaching out to the children in Borno.

“I believe we have truly achieved the objective of having you in Borno,” Olayera said.

During the three-day visit, Onakoya engaged children in the camps with training sessions and interactions and also held sessions with children from schools and members of the NAF Mess Chess Club.
