The National Chairman of the Nigeria Baseball and Softball Association, Akile Abayomi Bickerseth, has urged officials to be objective as the event kicked off on Saturday.
Abayomi made this statement during a technical committee meeting that took place on Friday night at the NIS Complex.
“The world will have its eyes on you when the officiating begins,” Abayomi said. “Therefore, you must be objective and avoid any form of sentiment in officiating, as this could affect the world's perception of you. Integrity is key.”
Abayomi also reminded everyone that Southern and Eastern Africa have completed their qualifiers, and all eyes will be on West Africa as this event begins. It is important for them to present themselves well.
He added that Nigeria, Ghana, Tunisia, and Benin Republic are all brother nations, and any actions that could sow discord need to be discouraged, while the spirit of sportsmanship should be encouraged.
The Baseball5 Regional Championship begins on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the NIS Sports Complex, with Nigeria and Ghana starting off in the opener.
