Nick Taylor Wins Sony Open in Hawaii After Playoff Thriller

Nick Taylor claimed his fifth career US PGA Tour victory at the Sony Open in Hawaii on Sunday, birdying the second playoff hole to defeat Colombia's Nico Echavarria. Taylor had a dramatic finish, chipping in a 60-foot eagle on the 72nd hole of regulation to keep himself in contention, while Echavarria birdied the 16th and 18th holes to force a playoff at Waialae Country Club.

 

 Despite trailing for much of the day, Taylor displayed composure under pressure, sinking a clutch birdie putt on the first playoff hole and hitting his third shot close on the second to seal the win after Echavarria three-putted.

 

This victory marked a significant milestone for the 36-year-old from Winnipeg, who improved his playoff record to 3-0. Taylor's first playoff win came at the 2023 Canadian Open, where he secured the title with an eagle on the fourth extra hole, making him the first host-nation winner since 1954.

 

He also triumphed in the 2023 Phoenix Open with a birdie on the second playoff hole. Taylor's journey to the win was not without its challenges, as he missed birdie opportunities on the 15th and 16th holes, but managed to regain his composure with a crucial eagle on the 18th.

 

Echavarria, who had hoped to add to his 2023 wins at the Puerto Rico Open and the Zozo Championship in Japan, fell short after a misjudged lag putt on the final hole. The 30-year-old Colombian admitted he didn't account for the wind, leading to a slow putt that ultimately cost him the title.

 

Despite the disappointment, Echavarria remained positive, noting that one bad putt couldn't overshadow an otherwise great week. Both Taylor and Echavarria fired impressive final rounds of five-under par 65 to finish the tournament at 16-under 264.
