Nick Dunlap made history by becoming the first player to secure PGA Tour victories as both an amateur and a professional in the same year, following his win at the Barracuda Championship. The 20-year-old topped the leaderboard with a commanding performance, finishing ahead of fellow American Vince Whaley at the event held in California, which employs a variation of the Stableford points system.
Dunlap delivered an impressive bogey-free final round, shooting a nine-under 62 that included seven birdies and an eagle. His stellar performance earned him 19 points, sealing a two-point victory at the Tahoe Mountain Club. This win came just months after he turned professional, having previously achieved a milestone as an amateur.
In January, Dunlap made headlines by becoming the first amateur since Phil Mickelson in 1991 to win a PGA Tour event when he claimed the American Express Championship. Following that victory, he turned professional and gained a two-year exemption on the tour, along with invitations to major tournaments such as the Masters, the US PGA Championship, and the Players Championship.
Reflecting on his remarkable achievement, Dunlap expressed surprise and honor at his unique accomplishment. He admitted that the period following his win at the American Express Championship was challenging, impacting his confidence. With his recent victory earning him over £550,000, Dunlap has joined an elite group of golfers, emulating Tiger Woods by winning both the US Junior Amateur and US Amateur titles.
