Nicaragua Defeats Korea 7-1 to Finish Undefeated in Group B

Posted : 10 September 2024

Nicaragua concluded the Opening Round of the WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup 2024 with an undefeated record after defeating Korea 7-1. The Nicaraguan team started strong by scoring two runs off Korea's starter, Hyungwon Lim, in the first inning. They maintained their dominance throughout the game, finishing with a 10-5 advantage in hits. Nicaragua will enter the Super Round with a perfect 2-0 record.

Hyungwon Lim struggled after initially striking out the first batter he faced. Although he threw strikes, Odlanyer Matamoros and Edmerson Castro hit singles off him. Lim then walked a batter, which led to Emanuel Trujillo's single, giving Nicaragua a 2-0 lead. After a visit from the coach, Lim managed to induce an inning-ending double play but was later replaced by Wonpyo Hong, who allowed an additional run on an RBI double by Matamoros.

Nicaragua’s starter, Stanling Orozco, faced a challenging situation in the second inning, loading the bases. However, he managed to escape the threat with back-to-back flyouts. In the fourth inning, Cristhian Moreno and Darren Britton hit consecutive singles, leading to Korea calling in Jaeyoung Song from the bullpen. Song intentionally walked a batter, and Edmerson Castro’s RBI single extended Nicaragua’s lead to 4-1. Korea responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but Nicaragua continued to build their lead in the sixth inning.

In the sixth, Darren Britton’s single and stolen base set up Junior Ortega’s RBI single, followed by Godwin Bemmett’s RBI single off new pitcher Hyunseok Choi. Choi managed to get Emanuel Trujillo to ground into a force-out, but pinch hitter Derek Loasiga added the seventh run. Korea’s Baeksan Kim came in to close the inning, striking out Luis Gonzalez. Bryan Torres then completed the game with a perfect bottom of the seventh inning, securing Nicaragua’s win.
