The Netherlands secured their second victory in the WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup 2024 with an 11-2 win over South Africa on Tuesday. Ranked 7th in the world, the Dutch team took an early lead and maintained control throughout the game. Despite South Africa’s efforts, including a solid offensive showing with nine hits, they couldn't overcome the Dutch dominance.
The Netherlands struck first in the opening inning when Jackey Josefa singled and later scored on Darryl Collins’ RBI single. In the second inning, Jair Von Borkulo led off with a single, stole second, and scored on Gedionne Marlin’s RBI hit. The Dutch added two more runs, extending their lead to 4-0 by the end of the second inning.
South Africa struggled defensively as the Dutch widened the gap in the fourth inning. Ruben Marnix’s leadoff bunt was followed by Marlin’s double, bringing in another run. With RBI singles from Raydley Legito and Josefa, the Dutch offense continued to put pressure on South Africa’s pitching staff, adding three more runs in the inning.
In the fifth inning, South Africa managed to score two runs off a two-RBI single from Luke November, but the Dutch responded quickly. Josefa’s three-RBI triple in the bottom of the fifth and a final run in the sixth secured the Netherlands’ 11-2 victory. The Netherlands will move forward with a perfect 2-0 record, while South Africa starts the Placement Round at 0-2.
