Nelly Korda Triumphs in Tight LPGA Match Play Battle, Keeps Knockout Hopes Alive

Posted : 04 April 2025

Nelly Korda, the defending champion and world No. 1, secured a 1-up victory over Jennifer Kupcho on Thursday to keep her chances alive for advancing to the knockout stage of the LPGA Match Play in Las Vegas.

Despite acknowledging her play as "very questionable" in the final stretch, Korda managed to hold onto her lead, going 2-up with a par at the 12th hole and maintaining that advantage despite a bogey at 15. Although Kupcho clawed back a hole after Korda bogeyed the par-five 16th, Korda sealed the win with a par on the final two holes.

Korda, who tied her opening match against Brittany Altomare on Wednesday, now faces a crucial must-win match against Thailand's Ariya Jutanugarn, who emerged victorious over Altomare on Thursday.

The new group format means the winner of each of the 16 groups advances to the knockout stage, with a playoff deciding the winner in case of a tie. Korda's victory last year at Shadow Creek was one of her seven LPGA titles in 2024, but she is focused on grinding through the match play despite not having her best form.

Elsewhere, Kim Hyo-joo and Maja Stark lead their respective groups with two wins each, setting up a showdown on Friday to determine who advances.

Meanwhile, World No. 2 Jeeno Thitikul and other players like Canadian Brooke Henderson and French golfer Celine Boutier are also in strong positions to move forward with perfect 2-0 records.

Lydia Ko of New Zealand stayed alive in her group with a dominant 6&5 win over Gabriela Ruffels, and she expressed excitement for the chance to continue competing despite the tight format.
