Nelly Korda Seeks to Reignite Form at St. Andrews for Women’s British Open

Posted : 21 August 2024

World No. 1 Nelly Korda is aiming to regain her early season brilliance as the Women's British Open returns to the iconic St. Andrews course this week. Korda enjoyed a stellar start to the year, winning six out of seven LPGA Tour events between January and May, including her second major victory at the Chevron Championship. However, her performance has dipped since then, with her best finish being a tie for 22nd at the Olympics.

Korda's struggles were evident in the season's other three majors, where she missed the cut at both the US Open and the PGA Championship, and tied for 26th at the Evian Championship. Reflecting on her recent form, Korda noted, "I've been compounding mistakes, and that's something I need to control better." She expressed determination to address this issue as she prepares for the challenges of St. Andrews.

Defending champion and World No. 2 Lilia Vu, who had never played at St. Andrews before, is eager to experience the historic venue. Vu, who will be paired with Korda and last year's runner-up Charley Hull in the opening rounds, shared her excitement, saying, "It's a surreal feeling being here at the home of golf." Vu is focusing on enjoying the experience rather than feeling the pressure to defend her title.

Charley Hull, the top home contender, is looking to make her mark at St. Andrews after recovering from a shoulder injury that forced her to miss the Evian Championship. Hull, who suffers from degenerative arthritis in her shoulder, is hoping the weather stays mild on Scotland's east coast. As she sets her sights on winning her first major, Hull emphasized how special it would be to achieve that goal at the home of golf, saying, "Walking down 17 and 18 at St. Andrews gives you goosebumps; it's something you've always dreamed of."
