Neah Evans Opts Out of Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony to Focus on Performance

Posted : 24 July 2024

Neah Evans has decided not to attend the opening ceremonies of this year's Paris Olympics, opting instead to concentrate on her performance. The 33-year-old track cyclist, who helped Team GB secure a silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Games, has chosen to skip the ceremonious event to maintain her competitive edge. Evans, speaking to Sportshour, noted that this will be her fourth major championship where she has avoided the opening ceremony, preferring to focus on achieving the best possible results.

Evans explained that while many athletes see the Olympics as a culmination of their efforts, she has always aimed to compete for medals and thus prioritizes performance over participation in the ceremony. She pointed out the extensive waiting and standing involved in the opening ceremony, which she believes does not align with elite performance needs.

Instead of attending the ceremony, Evans plans to use the evening for other activities. She mentioned that her team will take their special opening ceremony kit and might wear it to dinner as a nod to the occasion. This approach allows her to acknowledge the ceremony while staying focused on her preparations.

During her time at the holding camp at Celtic Manor Resort in Wales, Evans will be staying in luxurious lodges, further ensuring she remains in peak condition for the competition. Her decision underscores her commitment to performance and her strategic approach to major championships.
