Navy organises annual volleyball tournament to promote healthy lifestyle – FOC

The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command, Rear Adm. Mustapha Hassan, has reiterated the commitment of the Armed Forces to promoting a healthy lifestyle through sporting activities for its personnel.

Hassan expressed this commitment in his opening speech at the inaugural edition of the Admiral Superintendent Naval Dockyard Ltd. (NDL) Annual Volleyball Competition.

The three-day inaugural edition of the Admiral Superintendent Naval Dockyard Ltd. Annual Volleyball Competition was declared open at the Naval Dockyard Volleyball court, Victoria Island.

During his speech, Hassan also emphasized the need to foster non-complex relationships and good bonding among the armed forces and civilians.

“Today’s ceremony marks the beginning of the Admiral Superintendent’s Maiden Volleyball Tournament 2023, an event that will be part of an annual end-of-year activity of the Naval Dockyard Limited.

“Aside from being one of the scheduled end-of-the-year activities for the Yard, the tournament is also aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle, sporting activities, and good comradeship amongst the NDL and its numerous friends from sister services, government, private agencies, and friends.

“Also, the tournament aims to strengthen the bonds between the personnel of the Yard and their counterparts in these agencies, building trust and healthy competition while unwinding the stress of a very eventful year.

“Pertinently, the Naval Dockyard Limited organized this volleyball tournament to create further avenues for increased synergy among personnel and civilian partners of the Yard,” he said.

According to him, it is believed that the tournament will promote the growth of collaboration between the Yard and other institutions.

“This is with shared responsibilities, interests, and goals within the Navy, Armed Forces of Nigeria, and the general public.

“The Admiral Superintendent Volleyball Tournament is a 3-day long competitive event that features teams from the Naval Dockyard Limited, Western Naval Command, Naval Training Command, and Dodan Barracks.

“Each team will play and compete amongst themselves to determine the winners to claim the trophy and other prizes at the close of the tournament.

“I believe that, with the level of preparation and fighting spirit of the team from the Naval Dockyard, they are likely to emerge victorious at the end of the event,” he said.

The tournament host, Rear Adm. Bolaji Orederu, said that the tournament would engender a more friendly environment among its members.

“This volleyball tournament will now be part of our end-of-the-year activities and will foster friendliness and also aim at promoting a healthy lifestyle and good comradeship.

“This tournament also aims at strengthening the bonds between personnel of the yard and their counterparts in other agencies while unwinding the stress of a very eventful year,” he said.

The competition had four participating teams, which included the Naval Dockyard Ltd team, Dodan Warriors, Western Naval Command Team, and Naval Training Command.

The first two matches of the day had Naval Dockyard Ltd team losing the first match to the resilient Dodan Warriors 2-1.

Dodan Warriors won the first set by 25-23, while Naval Dockyard Ltd rallied back to win the second set by 25-17, making the score at 1-1.

Dodan Warriors eventually carried the day by winning the third set by 17-15 to put the scores at 2-1.

In the second match, Naval Training Command won by 2-0 against Western Naval Command.
