National Hockey Federation 5s Championships ends in Ibadan

Posted : 22 April 2024

Team Rivers won the male title of the maiden edition of the National Hockey Federation 5s Championships held in Ibadan by defeating hosts Team Oyo State 2-1 in the finals.

Team Kano State secured the third position after a 2-1 victory over Team Lagos.

In the women’s category, Plateau Queens emerged as the champions after defeating the Rocket team of Oyo State, while Rivers claimed the third position by defeating Lagos 2-1.

Danjuma Bello, the coach of the Plateau female team, commended his players for their performance and execution of game plans.

Bello emphasized the significance of hosting the first-ever 5s Championships in the history of Nigerian hockey, despite facing challenges such as the non-ideal pitch conditions.

He urged governors of other states to sponsor similar competitions to address the lack of regular competitions in Nigerian hockey.

Bamidele Garko, the sponsor of the championships, expressed the tournament's aim to develop and expand hockey's competitive scope nationwide.

Garko highlighted Nigeria's growth in hockey, citing its second-place finish in Africa in 2022 and 15th place globally.

The tournament, she believed, would contribute to reducing societal vices among youths, such as hooliganism and idleness.

Prize money was awarded to the winners, with N700,000 for the champions, N500,000 for the runners-up, and N250,000 for the third-placed teams in both male and female categories.

Individual awards, including Best Goalkeeper, Highest Goal Scorer, and Most Valuable Player, were also presented to deserving players in both categories.

Eight states participated in the championships, including Rivers, Plateau, Ogun, Lagos, Osun, Oyo, Ondo, and Kano.
