Minjee Lee Joins Three-Way Tie for US Women's Open Lead with Strong Performance

Posted : 02 June 2024

Former champion Minjee Lee surged into a three-way tie for the US Women's Open lead on Saturday, firing a four-under par 66 alongside Andrea Lee and overnight leader Wichanee Meechai. Lee, hailing from Australia, showcased her prowess with an eagle, three birdies, and a bogey to join the top trio on five-under par 205, matching the week's best round at Lancaster Country Club in Pennsylvania.

Thailand's Wichanee Meechai, despite lacking prior major success, maintained her composure on the back nine to finish with a solid 69, securing her place atop the leaderboard alongside Minjee Lee and Andrea Lee. Andrea Lee, a former amateur standout, positioned herself for contention with a steady 67, setting the stage for a potential maiden major title challenge on Sunday.

The leading trio, comprising Minjee Lee, Andrea Lee, and Wichanee Meechai, held a two-stroke advantage over Japan's Hinako Shibuno, who carded a commendable 66 for a total of 207. Yuka Saso, the defending champion from 2021, remained within striking distance with a 69, trailing by a further stroke on 208.

Minjee Lee's round was jump-started by an eagle on the seventh, propelling her into contention before back-to-back birdies solidified her position at the top. Despite the challenges posed by the course, Lee remained focused on her game plan, navigating through moments of adversity to maintain her share of the lead. With only five players under par for the tournament, including Wichanee Meechai, low scores remained elusive amidst the challenging conditions at the US Women's Open.
