England's Mimi Rhodes showcased her excellent form as she took the clubhouse lead in the first round of the Joburg Ladies Open at Modderfontein Golf Club, posting an impressive eight-under-par 65. This performance came off the back of her maiden victory at the Ford Women’s NSW Open in Australia.
Rhodes' round was bogey-free, and she highlighted the importance of positioning well on the fairway to set up good approach shots. With her putting also in fine form, she expressed confidence following her recent win but remained focused on staying grounded throughout the tournament.
Just one shot behind Rhodes, South Africa’s Casandra Alexander fired a solid six-under-par 66 to start the tournament. Despite a disrupted night of sleep, Alexander felt pleased with her performance, noting that while it wasn’t her best round, she managed to hit the right spots on the course and putted well.
Her consistent form this season, including multiple top-five finishes and a victory, has earned her the top spot in the Investec Order of Merit. She expressed her satisfaction at being in contention once again and credited her mental coach for helping her stay focused on her goals.
Meanwhile, India’s Pranavi Urs is also in a strong position at five under par, with five holes of her first round still to complete. The tournament, which is co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Ladies Tour and the Ladies European Tour, faced a brief interruption due to a heavy downpour that left the course waterlogged. As a result, the round will be completed on Friday morning.
The tournament officially began with a ceremonial tee shot by Cllr. Margaret Arnolds, the MMC for Finance. Arnolds emphasized the pride in promoting women’s sports within the city and encouraged the community to support the event, noting that entrance to the tournament was free.
