Mike Weir, captain of the International team for this year’s Presidents Cup, has appointed Japan’s Shigeki Maruyama as his fifth and final assistant. The 2024 Presidents Cup, which will see a 12-man US team face off against a lineup of international players from outside Europe, is set to take place from September 26-29 at The Royal Montreal Golf Club.
Weir, the 2003 Masters champion, praised Maruyama for his impressive track record in the event and highlighted the value of his presence in the team room. “His record in this event speaks for itself,” Weir said, emphasizing Maruyama's ability to inspire and support the team with his dynamic personality.
Maruyama, who has previously competed in the Presidents Cup in 1998 and 2000, joins a strong group of assistant captains that includes Ernie Els, Trevor Immelman, Geoff Ogilvy, and Camilo Villegas. Reflecting on his past experiences, Maruyama expressed his honor at being chosen and his eagerness to contribute to the team’s success in Montreal. “Representing the International team was one of the most valuable experiences in my golf career,” Maruyama stated.
The Presidents Cup, a Ryder Cup-style competition, has seen the United States team dominate with a record of 12-1-1, their only defeat occurring at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia in 1998. This year’s event promises to be another exciting chapter in the storied competition.
