The proposed merger between the PGA Tour and the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund has received mixed reactions from professional golfers. Cameron Smith, the Open champion, described it as "a joke," while Matt Fitzpatrick, the US Open winner, found it "confusing."
The announcement of the merger last week shocked the golfing world, leading to an investigation by the US Senate.
Fitzpatrick expressed uncertainty about the deal and mentioned that very few people have clarity on the situation. PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan brokered the agreement with Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the governor of the PIF.
However, details about the new entity and its implications remain scarce. Smith revealed that he received a phone call from Al-Rumayyan before the news broke and described the initial reaction as thinking it was a joke. He stated that there is still much to be worked out and many curious players on both sides.
Despite the off-course issues, Fitzpatrick emphasized his focus on playing golf and not allowing external factors to distract him. He mentioned that his victory at the previous year's US Open has boosted his self-belief.
